I am super excited to announce some really big news!!! Some of you may already know as I inadvertently posted it on facebook… one day I will be social media proficient!

Sooooooo… “simply you… by stef” is moving to Park Avenue! I feel very blessed to have grown enough in one year of business to be able to officially be on my own in my very own space! I owe a huge thank you to my family, friends, and of course all of my incredible patients that have been instrumental in making this a reality.

The new location is in Brandywine Square on north Park Avenue in Winter Park. Before you stress about Park Ave parking, there is a private lot directly behind the building so parking is actually a breeze! The new front door faces the square so if discretion is important we’ve got you covered!

Finding a convenient location for my patrons was very important to me. Since the range of home addresses goes from Celebration to Daytona I thought staying in Winter Park (somewhat central) was best for all. Also, an appointment with me could be the perfect excuse to shop and or dine on the Avenue! A win win I think!

We will continue to offer all of our current services and we are elated to announce new esthetician services as well! More information on that will be coming to you soon.

We have some work to do on the new space before we can move in so stay tuned for further updates.  I am hopeful to be able to announce a Grand Reopening in early October. In the meantime it is business as usual at our current location.

So it begins… summer in Florida. Each year the battle between having good ole family fun in the sun and protecting the Heisler family skin goes into boost mode… game on UVA/UVB!
Don’t worry, I am not going all “type A” and recommending SPF 90 clothing for everyone all summer long. Nor do I find it necessary to purchase a detergent that infuses SPF into your clothing (yes that is a real thing). Nope, none of that! Instead let me propose we all enjoy the pool, beach, and a little color on our skin. Just be smart about it!

Make sure you teach your “kids” (husband included) that applying a daily sunblock is as important as brushing your teeth… winter, spring, summer and fall! As for summer/fall up your game and teach the next level of sunblock application. First, make sure your sunblock has either zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as an active ingredient. Next, make sure everyone applies enough to actually provide protection, a half dollar sized amount for the face. While playing outdoors be sure to reapply, reapply, and reapply… every single hour… yes, every single hour!

For those of you that spend your hard earned money to maintain even toned, glowing, radiant skin do not panic if you get a bit too much sun this summer. As always I’ve got you covered… any damage incurred this season can be erased next season!

Seeing as May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, I thought I should share a few facts about melanoma that you may not know.

Melanoma is:
THE MOST COMMON CANCER for adults ages 25-29
Does not discriminate based on skin tone
Can appear in areas that are not exposed to the sun
Is the DEADLIEST OF ALL TYPES OF SKIN CANCER… according to the American Academy of Dermatology melanoma kills one American every hour
Early detection is key… if found before spreading to the lymph nodes the 5 year survival rate is 98%

SO…
Get a yearly skin check by a board certified clinician.
Wear sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY! If the above facts are not enough to convince you, then consider this… in 2013 the Annals of Internal Medicine published a study that proved daily sunscreen use helps to prevent premature aging caused by sun exposure. In other words, daily use of sunscreen equals fewer wrinkles and age spots! Lather up!

It has been said that “life begins at the end of your comfort zone”. Well then, I have begun again! I was asked to participate in a radio interview dedicated to the many facets of anti-aging. The focus of the piece was to provide answers to questions relating to anti-aging treatments, procedures and services. It was a lot of fun (despite my dislike for the sound of my recorded voice) and the host, Ashley, is awesome! The show will run from 12:00-1:00pm today on Heartbeat Radio for Women. If you have an iPhone or iPad you can download a free app to listen or you can go to the website www.heartbeatradiousa.com! Let me know what you think!

When I host the ever popular “Lunch and Learn” this question is always near the top of FAQ’s.  People want to know who they should go to… a MD, DO, NP, or PA?  Does it matter?

The laws vary from state to state, so first and foremost make sure the clinician you choose for these services has the proper credentials.

Aesthetic medicine is not rocket science, HOWEVER, results are dependent upon the skill of the clinician.  Injectables, in particular, deliver best results in the hands of an experienced clinician with an artistic eye.  In other words, there is a level of skill that cannot be taught in a classroom and is not guaranteed by the initials following the name of a clinician.

Practice makes perfect.  This is certainly true in aesthetics.  Typically, the more frequently a clinician is performing aesthetic treatments the better the results they deliver become.

Communication is critical.  There are numerous aesthetic clinicians that deliver fantastic results… choose the one you feel the most comfortable with and confident in!

If it seems too good to be true it probably is!  When you see exceptionally low pricing on aesthetic treatments you might want to think twice.  The old saying “you get what you pay for” is an old saying for a reason!

Botox parties initially came about so as not to waste one drop of the precious miracle treatment… it’s basically like liquid gold!  Now that Botox has become more mainstream such parties have fallen out of vogue.  Recently I have discovered the tremendous value that Glenrose (my Business Manager) and I can deliver to our patients with a modernized version of the old Botox party.  Although it is called a “Botox Party”… for some guests, Botox might not be the answer.  That is why it’s important that we provide information on all of the nonsurgical aesthetic treatments available.

Having been in aesthetic medicine for almost 10 years (wow time flies and I’m getting old!) I forget that the treatments we provide continue to evoke fear in people.  I forget that what we consider common knowledge about what we do is in fact not common.  With this in mind we have made it our mission to educate people and hopefully discount prevailing misinformation that has needlessly put fear in the minds of many.  We have had the most success in accomplishing this by offering exclusive Botox parties to our patients and their guests.  It has been an evolving process but one that I feel has been close to perfected.  I say “close” because well…  I am “type A” after all!

So in my humble opinion I declare Botox Parties a 2014 Do!  Here is why:

People, by nature, typically feel most comfortable when accompanied by friends, family or both.  A Botox party by definition creates this atmosphere.  The party can be located within our beautiful facility or in the comfort of the “host’s” home.

Familiarity brings about a sense of comfort and fosters communication.  During these parties I will begin with an introduction to Glenrose and myself.  It is critical that our patients and potential patients feel comfortable with us.

Knowledge is power.  Rather than the old “paperwork, poke, and pay” system often used in these type events, I first provide information not only about Botox but also about the variety of services we offer.    It is also a great way to open up the conversation, answer questions, and debunk common myths.

Individualized attention is key. These are not “one size fits all” treatments.  I meet with each interested guest to formulate and customize a treatment plan for them.  At that point it is up to the guest to proceed with a treatment or contemplate one in the future.  At the very least, each guest will leave with more knowledge about nonsurgical aesthetic treatments and a comprehensive plan on how they too could achieve a natural more youthful appearance.

Lastly, everyone loves a reason to get together with friends, enjoy a cocktail, and catch up… if you happen to leave looking refreshed (within the next week or so) then so be it!

My husband, Laurence, and I sit down at the beginning of each month to coordinate our schedules.  Of course we then have constant updates throughout the month (as in daily), but we make an attempt to keep one another informed!  This time I was initially overwhelmed but quickly warmed to see the number of charitable events I have found myself involved with.  There have been too many blessings to count since I have started working for myself and this is definitely near the top of the list.  Being able to get involved in organizations that help others has brought tremendous joy to me in so many ways I thought I would share a few…

A stronger spiritual connection… no matter what religion or belief system, the act of selfless giving is sure to enrich that connection.

Becoming educated and spreading awareness about social problems and more importantly, becoming part of the solution.

Finding true inner satisfaction… nothing can cultivate this emotion like helping others in need.

Perhaps Winston Churchill said it best… “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”.  Indeed!
